故事
What is “superlative artistry”? This is a laudatory description of the superb pieces that demonstrated the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship from among the various exquisite crafts (pottery, cloisonné, metalworking, woodworking, lacquerware, and so on) produced during the late 19th century. This artistry shocked the west, where japonisme had already become something of trend, and it met with even greater acclaim than in Japan.
This video explores its origins by delving into the exquisite sword fittings crafted by Edo‑period artisans. You’ll see incredibly delicate techniques, where flowers, birds, and other motifs are engraved with astonishing precision onto tiny metal pieces—transforming the sword from a weapon of war into a true work of art.Discover how these remarkable skills were passed down and refined, ultimately shaping the legendary master craftsmen of the Meiji era. Enjoy the journey into Japan’s artistry.
